Summary

Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville—derailing the War Between the States and changing America forever。 In this new nation, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the Native and Negro Reeducation Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn to put down the dead。 But there are also opportunities—and Jane is studying to become an Attendant, trained in both weaponry and etiquette to protect the well-to-do。 It’s a chance for a better life for Negro girls like Jane。 After all, not even being the daughter of a wealthy white Southern woman could save her from society’s expectations。

But that’s not a life Jane wants。 Almost finished with her education at Miss Preston’s School of Combat in Baltimore, Jane is set on returning to her Kentucky home and doesn’t pay much mind to the politics of the eastern cities, with their talk of returning America to the glory of its days before the dead rose。 But when families around Baltimore County begin to go missing, Jane is caught in the middle of a conspiracy, one that finds her in a desperate fight for her life against some powerful enemies。 And the restless dead, it would seem, are the least of her problems。

Hoooooboy reading this in the context of COVID is something else。 I would say the book itself is fine, had a few holes and representation issues but overall moved along well enough in my opinion。 My big takeaway though is that I genuinely think the worldbuilding choices are FASCINATING in light of the disease we live in the wake of today。

I’m going to give this 4 stars for now but I may change my mind to 5 stars later on。 This book is about a girl name Jane who attends a school that specializes in killing the undead。 The dead started rising up at Gettysburg and now they are all over the United States。 The school trains former slaves and minorities to protect the wealthy white folks。 Things quickly go south for Jane and her companions。 She ends up in a new settlement in the Great plains where her life gets even harder and more dan I’m going to give this 4 stars for now but I may change my mind to 5 stars later on。 This book is about a girl name Jane who attends a school that specializes in killing the undead。 The dead started rising up at Gettysburg and now they are all over the United States。 The school trains former slaves and minorities to protect the wealthy white folks。 Things quickly go south for Jane and her companions。 She ends up in a new settlement in the Great plains where her life gets even harder and more dangerous。 The story was unique and I really like the authors writing。 It is a story I think just about anyone would enjoy。 The only reason I didn’t give this 5 starts is that this book just didn’t have that wow factor that just made it stand out and really leave me amazed。 。。。more

The Civil War is put on pause when the dead soldiers begin to walk after the Battle of Gettysburg。 The North and South band together against a new enemy - the zombie plague。Jane grows up in a world where all African Americans and Native Americans are sent to boarding schools at the age of 12 to become Attendants - "servants" trained to kill zombies for the proper, wealthy ladies of the East Coast。 She see's this as her only opportunity at a life off her mother's plantation。 In her final year at The Civil War is put on pause when the dead soldiers begin to walk after the Battle of Gettysburg。 The North and South band together against a new enemy - the zombie plague。Jane grows up in a world where all African Americans and Native Americans are sent to boarding schools at the age of 12 to become Attendants - "servants" trained to kill zombies for the proper, wealthy ladies of the East Coast。 She see's this as her only opportunity at a life off her mother's plantation。 In her final year at the school, she ends up uncovering a scandal that would put the entire county of Baltimore in danger。 🧟‍♀️This is my first ever YA horror and it's my second ever historical horror。 There's very little zombie action as it's more focused on the main characters' development and the historical events of the time, but it's an enjoyable read。 I'll be picking up the sequel at some point。 。。。more

I think my biggest issue with this book was my own expectations for what I thought the plot/setting would be。 I loved the concept of zombies being a part/around during the Civil War, but this story doesn't center around those events but followed after。 The zombies, referred to as shamblers, didn't feel unique or even featured that much within the 450 page novel。 I get it, trust me, that most zombie/survival stories are less about the monsters and the people trying to stay alive and their own str I think my biggest issue with this book was my own expectations for what I thought the plot/setting would be。 I loved the concept of zombies being a part/around during the Civil War, but this story doesn't center around those events but followed after。 The zombies, referred to as shamblers, didn't feel unique or even featured that much within the 450 page novel。 I get it, trust me, that most zombie/survival stories are less about the monsters and the people trying to stay alive and their own struggles, but I wanted more intense stakes and action。There is also tiny amounts of steampunk elements in the story that interested me, but not enough to really matter? I enjoyed the story but I think I wanted MORE from it。 More zombies, more steampunk, etc。 I liked the sample I got from the story, but I wasn't full after my read。 。。。more

I am not really sure why this was sitting on my TBR shelf。 I am assuming the cover caught my eye。 Who knows? I can only say that I am so glad it did。 I loved this book。 Ms。 Ireland took a theme that could have been just a regular, boring zombie book and made it relevant and exciting。 I started reading and didn't put it down until I was finished。 I am not really sure why this was sitting on my TBR shelf。 I am assuming the cover caught my eye。 Who knows? DNF。。。。some awesome themes about post-civil war mentality towards African Americans but the story didn’t seem to be going anywhere and was still slow moving almost 3/4 of the way in!

I liked this book quite a bit。 I like how it's a historical fiction novel with fantasy as well。 It is based around the time of the Civil War, so there are a lot of themes like slavery and politics, but also involves a war against shamblers, which are like zombies。 Very exciting! Dread Nation is an excellent horror/dystopian novel! Imagine a world where the American Civil War ended when the dead rose up as zombies。 Justina Ireland has written a compelling book with strong characters, an interesting plot, and an original premise。 5 stars。

This is the 1st fiction title I've put in my anti-racism bookshelf, but it won't be the last。 It was so good, I've already started reading the sequel。Justina Ireland creates an alternative history with fantastical elements。 It parallels, in a way, the alternative history that has been mainstream history。 In Ireland's fantasy world a mysterious infection causes people to lose their minds and act like zombies。 In the history of the books I read as a child, the fantasy is something some people stil This is the 1st fiction title I've put in my anti-racism bookshelf, but it won't be the last。 It was so good, I've already started reading the sequel。Justina Ireland creates an alternative history with fantastical elements。 It parallels, in a way, the alternative history that has been mainstream history。 In Ireland's fantasy world a mysterious infection causes people to lose their minds and act like zombies。 In the history of the books I read as a child, the fantasy is something some people still believe today: Black and Indigenous People of Color are no longer oppressed。I was taught that the Civil War changed everything。 Lincoln was a hero for freeing the slaves with the Emancipation Proclamation。 In Dread Nation, it changed everything, too。 Lincoln isn't featured。 A Black girl is the hero of this book。 And it's clear, in her book, that the people who fought against freedom for all people haven't given up just because they lost the war。Don't read this book just because you want to support a Black author writing about Black heroes。 Read this book because it's a great story。 Read it with your children (waring, zombies, so mature children)。 Share it with your spouses and friends。 Enjoy it while you learn and grow。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Dread Nation by Justina Ireland is a thrilling novel about racial inequality and change。 I’m not much of a reader, but I have to admit this book was exciting and engaging。 The book takes place in the Civil War era, but with a sci-fi twist。 Zombies。 The entire world has been ravaged by a plague that turns people into zombies via a bite from another zombie。 In the midst of all this, at Miss Preston’s Combat School for Girls, Jane is just a curious, tomboyish, and homesick teenage girl in her last Dread Nation by Justina Ireland is a thrilling novel about racial inequality and change。 I’m not much of a reader, but I have to admit this book was exciting and engaging。 The book takes place in the Civil War era, but with a sci-fi twist。 Zombies。 The entire world has been ravaged by a plague that turns people into zombies via a bite from another zombie。 In the midst of all this, at Miss Preston’s Combat School for Girls, Jane is just a curious, tomboyish, and homesick teenage girl in her last year of schooling。 Katherine is also in her last year at Miss Preston’s, however, she is the polar opposite of Jane。 She’s pretty, and very much a teacher’s pet。 Through a series of events that nobody could’ve predicted, the girls must learn to work together in order to survive。 The book does a great job of developing backstories as it goes on。 The suspenseful nature of piecing together plot points just makes the story even more addicting as it progresses。 Overall, this book is great for those who like sci-fi or historical fiction as it combines historical culture with the new zombie threat very well。tOne criticism I would make is that Ireland made the book a bit too political for my liking。 I was more interested in the action packed zombie apocalypse part of the story than the real life political applications presented。 Yet, I must admit that the political parties from the story itself were quite interesting and added depth to the story making it overall more intriguing and complex。 In general, I think that the book is well written and can provide a lot of insight to the past。 Anyone can take away a few facts or things to think about from this book and that just makes it that little bit better。 。。。more
